Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

By mentors

Our program is meant to fit around your schedule. You set your availability, and you decide the
number of students you can take on.

For each student you take on for the Peer Mentorship Program, you can expect 15 hours of
on-call work spread out over a year. This is roughly one hour a month.

The Senior Kickstart Program is substantially more of a time commitment. For each student you
take on, it requires around 54 hours of work spread out across a period of 4-6 months. This is
approximately 7-14 hours a month. About half of this work will be on-call, and the other half will
be offline edits.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please complete the application to join the AdmitMate mentor database, which can be found on the homepage under “become a mentor”. While we cannot guarantee immediate student matches, we will prioritize pairing you with the best-fit students based on your background and interests. This is the only information we would require from you at this stage.

Once we identify a suitable student match, we will arrange a 15-minute initial consultation between you and the student. This session will allow both parties to assess compatibility and discuss potential mentorship. Should the student wish to proceed, you will receive the necessary paperwork, detailed mentorship and curriculum instructions, and access to AdmitMate resources.

In the Peer Mentorship Program, your main meeting responsibilities will be working with students to brainstorm unique passion projects and extracurriculars, as well as provide college admission advice. This may include helping your student get introduced to research, volunteering, or maybe applying to competitions.

In the Senior Kickstart Program, your main meeting responsibilities will be brainstorming essay topics, writing essays alongside students, and explaining revisions made to particular essays. You should also help them with their admissions strategy and selecting their best-fit majors.

When you’re matched with your student, we
provide you with comprehensive training so you have an understanding of your responsibilities
and our curriculum.

Your primary responsibilities apart from meeting with your student is providing offline feedback. This can include a revision of a college or summer program application essay, developing a college list, or constructing a summer plan. All offline feedback is paid.

You are also expected to spend a couple minutes before each meeting preparing the agenda and respond within 24 hours to all communications.

While we encourage you to brainstorm and ideate extracurriculars/essays alongside students, we discourage mentors to directly give students these things on silver platters. Your job is to provide guidance and advice

For the Peer Mentorship Program, you will meet with your student on average once a month, though you will meet more frequently earlier on.

For the Senior Kickstart Program, you will be meeting with students on a weekly basis.

You can choose which program you would like to mentor for in your application!

Sessions should be exclusively between you and your student, though parents may join the last 10 minutes of the first session upon request. You will be expected to communicate with parents over email as required.
